Edwin Diaz’s surprising reaction to possibility of losing Mets closer job

New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz isn’t a happy camper right now. The Mets closer is struggling on the mound, and is in danger of losing his job. Diaz is trying to stay upbeat about anything that may come his way, including a demotion.

“I’m open to everything,” Diaz said Saturday, per ESPN. The reliever blew a save opportunity for the Mets against the Miami Marlins, giving up a four-run lead in the ninth. The closer got pulled, and team went on to lose 10-9.

The Mets are looking for any and every answer, as the team is struggling through a 20-25 season. While it is by no means certain that Diaz will lose his closer status, the Mets need to quickly find wins.

Diaz’s season in New York

Times have not been kind to the Mets closer recently. Diaz is struggling this season, giving up seven earned runs in his last three outings. He’s also allowed a total of seven hits, and two hits in his last two plus innings of work.

Expectations were very high for Diaz this season. In 2023, the closer got hurt and missed the entire campaign due to a tear in his right knee. It was a horrible injury, as the tear came while Diaz was celebrating with his Puerto Rico team in the World Baseball Classic.

Diaz was able to come back from the injury in 2024, but is getting batted around by opposing hitters.

“I want to help my team to win,” Diaz added. “That’s my main thing. If they want to talk to me about that and I feel good about it, I agree on it. I just want to win games in any position they put me.”

The team needs Diaz back to his old ways. The closer is a two-time All-Star, who was the American League saves leader in 2018 with Seattle.

Mets pitching this season

Diaz isn’t the only player for New York who has struggled. The team has been let down by their pitching all year, in various ways. Mets ace Kodai Senga hasn’t been able to pitch at all, due to shoulder and arm fatigue. The team is working him in the bullpen Sunday, to get his mechanics sorted out.

The team has a total ERA of 4.01, which is not going to help the club win many games. That mark is good for only 15th in Major League Baseball. The team also had two of their starting pitchers throw disastrous innings. Mets’ pitchers Joey Lucchesi and Julio Teheran each lasted only one start, as both hurlers gave up an ERA over 10. Mets fans are desperate to see the club turn these stats around.

The Mets get a chance to do that on Sunday, as the team is in action again against the Marlins. The first pitch is at 1:40 Eastern.
